| Date: | 01.10.2026 - 24.01.2027 |
| Aim of the course: | The aim of the curriculum is to develop learners’ systematic understanding of the sustainability of the built environment, the technical assessment of buildings, and the carbon footprint of buildings throughout their life cycle. It also aims to provide knowledge of how residential buildings can be renovated to improve their sustainability, and how building data can be structured and utilized for effective life-cycle management and informed decision-making. |
| Target group: | Construction and real estate professionals. |
| Prerequisites: | Prior knowledge of construction, ≥ EQF level 5 |
| Topics: | Develop the skills needed to drive the sustainable renovation and decarbonisation of residential buildings. This joint 6 ECTS micro-credential, developed by TalTech and Riga Technical University (RTU), combines the expertise of two leading technical universities and provides practical knowledge in sustainable renovation, building carbon footprint assessment, BIM, and life-cycle management. Through flexible online learning and a collaborative two-day intensive in-person workshop, you will gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to make more sustainable decisions in the built environment. Programme modules 1. Sustainable Urban Transformation and Climate Change 2. Renovation of a Typical Residential Building 3. Assessment of the Technical Condition and Service Life Prediction of a Typical Residential Building 4. Building Carbon Footprint – Theory 5. Building Carbon Footprint – Reporting 6. Smart Residential Solutions and Decarbonisation 7. Two-Day Intensive In-Person Workshop (held at the TalTech or RTU campus) |
| Study results: | 1. Analyse the interactions between the built environment, energy systems, and climate change, and propose sustainable solutions for the built environment; 2. Apply recognized methodologies, standards, and data sources to calculate and interpret the life-cycle carbon footprint of buildings; 3. Assess the technical condition, durability, and service life of buildings and building structures; 4. Develop and evaluate renovation strategies for existing residential buildings; 5. Use Building Information Modelling (BIM) to structure, classify, exchange, and analyse construction and building data for effective life-cycle management and informed decision-making. |
